The statue of Henry Killam Murphy, the architect who designed the campus of the University of Shanghai. Henry was born in 1877 in Connecticut, graduated from Yale University. He began working as an architect in New York. Murphy came to China in 1914, and set up his office in Shanghai Bund in 1918. He designed many famous university buildings and campuses in China. Murphy attracted the attention of Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek and was hired in 1928 for a variety of projects. Henry's architecture covers Western, Chinese and Eurasian styles.
